The special holiday train has been running every weekend this month, and it’s a real treat to see. Each car is from a different time period, and features advertisements from that era as well.
It’s crazy seeing ads that say things like “Filtered cigarettes are better for your health!” and a courtesy ad that said “What if YOU were old?”
As a photographer, it’s also interesting because all the ads are drawn. We talk about the way advertisements use photo manipulation now, but it’s not much different than before. Ads just drew the image they wanted to create. Women with perfect hair and figures, muscular, charming looking men, etc. It’s only the medium that changed.
Anyway, you can catch this train next weekend on the F platform starting at 2nd Avenue and it travels into Queens Plaza via the M line.
